In 189 B.C., after defeating the Gauls Boi (and making Cisalpin Gaul a Roman province) the Romans founded a colony, later transformed into a "Municipium", and called "Bononia" .

The urban part of the remarkable ruins of the old Via Emilia, can be seen in the underpass of Rizzoli street and Ugo Bassi street; in fact this route which is very important for regional connections, passed through the city centre. At the beginning Bononia was a city with 2-3.000 farmers and another 10-12.000 men working in the fields.
The town which today emerges from the excavations was from the imperial age and it had a population of about 10.000 in habitants, in the chief-town only. The decumanum maximum, the Roman street running from East to West are below the very central Ugo Bassi and Rizzoli streets.  
Close to St. Mamolo Gate still arrives the Setta aqueduct which still works perfectly and after 14 km finishes at the bottom of St. Luca and Osservanza mount. Already in Roman times the houses had red-brick floors, a material that was to become typical of the area. No dwellings of the Roman city remain (like those we can see from the Middle Ages) but only the streets layout, the aqueducts, the bridges, the statues and the tools. In the named underpass you will find street pavimentum, crepidines (raised steps) and even fistule aquariae, it means aqueduct pipes laid down under cobblestones.
