The requisition of ecclesiastic properties was a heavy blow for the convent system. In the 19th Century many monasteries were transformed into barracks, schools, cemeteries, hospitals and prisons.

After the arrival of the French, the new regime which came into force caused the demolition of ecclesiastic buildings and, in particular, a different use for the many conventual complexes (to be exact 31 monasteries and 38 convents) which the Church, following its precise supremacy plan, had inserted in the city, throughout the centuries. This different use of the conventual complexes, which had been started by the "Napoleonic transformations", after the Unification of Italy was carried on by the subsequent Italian governments. This improper use continues even now, where certain services can be founded, particularly barracks and military installations, which would find a more appropriate setting elsewhere. The following are the most important buildings which, during the Napoleonic period were either built or changed their use: the G. B. Martini Conservatory (of Music), in Piazza Rossini, created out of the Agostinian Monastery, the afore-mentioned Poggi Palace, which became the main building of the University; the National Picture Gallery - which was founded in 1793 by the Bologna Senate to avoid the transfer of the pictures to France - moved in 1808 into the ex Jesuit monastery of St.lgnazio.

Monastery of St. Giovanni in Monte (below) became the Prison of the town (now converted into University spaces a brilliant restoration.
