Near Porta Galliera, symbol of Papal power and its
restoration, you can see the Montagnola and Agosto VIII square, where the
popular rising against the Austrians took place. To the right of the Porta
Galliera, built in 1661, there are the remains of the ancient Cittadella
di Galliera which, since the 15th Century, was built and destroyed five
times by mob revolutions, being considered the symbol of despotic
governments. Beside this, Montagnola (a public garden, with trees planted
in 1806 and a staircase added towards the end ofthe 19th Century) built
over the ruins of the citadel and particularly linked to the memory of the
popular rising which took place on August 8, 1848, against the Austrians
and which was commemorated by the monument built in 1904. |
