The air-raids of the Second World War (Bologna was in the zone immediately behind the Gothic Line) destroyed extensive areas of the city which would be revived under the ideals of the Resistence.

During the course of World War, Bologna was directly hit by the violence of the war, during the period of the Republic of Salò (1943-1945) when it found itself enclosed in the zone immediately behind the Gothic Line which ran along the nearby Apennines. The raids of the allied airforce, aimed at hitting the important railway-junction, also destroyed the adjoining areas, among which was the Lame district, in this very district, in November 1944, around the Ospedale Maggiore, which no longer exists, there the battle of Porta Lame took place, that is to say the most important battie, within the city, of Italian Resistance against the Nazi troops. Once Bologna was liberated by the Allies troops on April 21th 1945 after the fights to cross the Reno and its affluents in the plain between British and Poles, and the American troops coming from the Bolognese mountain, this area has totally changed today; in its centre, immediately after the war, the Palasport (F. Allegra) was built; more recently near it the Palazzo della Regione  was built.
