In the 19th Century the Victorious Bougeosie tried to take over the architectural style from the defeated class, through Eclecticism, neo-Gothic and neo-Renaissance "revivals" and, up to the 30's, with "Floreal" and "Deco".

It was during the 30's, in the 19th Century, that the romantic restoration of the medieval city, aimed at giving it a Gothic aspect began.
Through Eclecticism, which includes NeoGothic, Neo-Renaissance and also Neo Classic style, the European middle -class attempted to take over from the previous social class, the aristocracy, its architectural style and, at the same time, changed the internal use of the palaces. In Italy the middle -class also wanted to unify in one style only the many regional experiences by means of the Renaissance "revival". In Bologna, while Carducci referred to Ruskin and to the artistic morality of the Middle Ages, there were attempts to establish, above all, a laical tradition, after three centuries of ecclesiastic hegemony, trying to follow the example of the free Medieval Commune and the Renaissance of the Bentivoglio period. In this context, in the 20th Century, the Committee for historic and artistic Bologna, encouraged particularly by Alfonso Rubbiani and Guido Zucchini, began quite a number of restorations which, besides their unquestionable merits, would bring into the city what has been defined as a "subtle atmosphere of adulteration".

The Neo-Gothic and Neo-Renaissance "revival" formed in the city the Eclectic style which, at the beginning, expressed itself in a very showy way in the  Cassa di Risparmio already mentioned, but soon evolved into the "Floreal" style, and then, after 1925, towards "Deco";
Bologna was, in fact, after Turin and Milan the third great centre in Italy for the Floreal style.
Buildings from the first decades of the 20th Century are Poste Palace, some University buildings, the Majestic-Baglioni Hotel, made out of old palaces,  and Sala Borsa (Stock Exchange) now restored in the biggest library of the town.
