During the Fascist period, the urban policy begun in the second half of the 19th Century was continued, while the building of porticoes was faced with style problems due to reinforced concrete. The "Direttissima" began and the rationalism in architecture asserted itself.

Towards the 30's the Eclectic and Floreal style (with many "Deco" appendices) was still predominant in the new buildings in the urban scene. But this kind of decoration on buildings which, though still keeping their old external structure, had changed their internal use, met with another inconsistency; the progressive changing of building materials. Reinforced concrete suited the rationalistic trend, but it was not suitable, at least at that stage, as a satisfactory solution for the portico style which was too square, and supported by columns covered with false marble. An example of this crisis can be seen at the west side of Via Roma (now Via Marconi) built in that period, running from the former palazzo del Gas (at the corner of Via Lame) to the former palazzo della Lancia (at the corner of Via Riva di Reno).

The experiment building of the University Department of Engeneering was, on the contrary, very successful and new; this faculty was built in 1934 by the architect G. Vaccaro.
