Cosmopolitan and metropolitan, the 90's city moving towards 2,000, like a "fourth Bologna", has radically changed its relation with the province putting to the test the "Emilian model" with new problems coming from a changed Europe and the new "global village".

In the last 20 years the aspect of the historic Bolognese centre has changed and became a sort of streets and porticoes confusion due to the traffic increase, t!1e presence of many ethnic groups (the image of "Bologna-village" almost disappeared) and a commercial trend that encloses the historic centre within a circle of hypermarkets able to threaten the traditional network of stores and small stores, also alters the daily life. The city expands in a tumultuous way, being joined to the provincial area, in an objectively metropolitan dimension. The G. Marconi Airport was enlarged; the substructures such as the ring road and the roads, even if they date back to last years, are not enough; a new station, connected to the "high speed" tunnel is in progress; the fair organization, that worked during almost the whole of last year, brings millions of people on the Bolognese area; the structures such as the Centergross and the Interporto are located beside the huge food centre near by Porta St. Donato; the population who is looking for new housing solutions tends to go from the centre to the villages on the industrial belt; the birth rate is not enough and Bologna, city and province, will be an area with a high number of old people. But anyway the "Emilian model" of small and medium  industry seems to resist, maintaining an own difference, which is clashing with the new problems posed by the arrival of the new European dimension and the market globalization.
